Why does Donald lie so much? Because if most of the people believe his lies, then he has license to justify any act, legal and, maybe, illegal. In other words, successful lies give him power to do anything he wants. For example, if he has hidden economic ties with Russia or wants new economic ties to Russia, then lie about the nature of the Russian leader. Praise Putin as a strong leader and overlook his crimes. Disavow any relationships with Russia. It’s all good. Just snuggle up to this power-grabbing country. Lies can accomplish what President Reagan and others would have considered impossible.
Of course, the success of his lies rests with muffling those who cry “the emperor wears no clothes”. In other words, stifling the free press like ABC, CBC, NBC, CNN, and the New York Times to name a few reputable news sources. Unlike Russia, our constitution and the judicial branch of the government protects freedom of the press. So, Donald can’t just shut them down. What does he do instead? Well, I think you all know. He calls them, again and again, the ‘fake news’.
He and Steve Bannon are adopting a tactic used by the Nazis prior to the Second World War. Joseph Goebbels was the propaganda minister for the Nazi regime. That post was comparable to the one Steve Bannon has been appointed. Here is what Goebbels wrote over half a century ago:
Well, Donald and his surrogates seem to be following Goebbels advice. They’ve told some whoppers! And, they keep telling them again and again. You know like three to five million immigrants illegally voting and throwing the popular election to Hillary. How many times have we heard that one?
Goebbels also said: “Truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Donald and Bannon seem to be heeding this warning. Consider one of Donald’s tweets:
The so-called ‘FAKE NEWS’ is actually the truth. So replace FAKE NEWS media with the word ‘truth’ and the phrase ‘American People’ with ‘State’ and you have Goebbels message.
Goebbels’ propaganda worked for the Nazis before and during the Second World War. Will it work for America in this new millennium? The answer depends on whether we support a free and responsible press or whether we succumb to Donald’s rants. In short, it depends on how gullible are the American People.
I believe that the only check on government power in real time is a free and independent press.
Donald keeps lying. No one really disputes his reprehensible pattern of deceit. Calling responsible news publications Fake News is just one of his recurrent themes. This particular lie, however, may be the most damaging of all. Erode the people’s faith in the press and you pave the way for an autocracy.
